Bonham, Texas -- After almost a half-century in business, another local landmark went the way of Smith-Moore & Williams, The Steakout and Hickory BBQ when the crew at Baker Tire pulled down the big, sliding doors on Friday, June 19, 2026.

This started as a family business and never changed. Johnny Baker and his youngest son, Stan, built Baker Tire in its current location and opened the doors for business in February 1978.

Originally, Stan was reluctant when his father asked him to get Baker Tire up and running and then work for him once Stan got out of high school.

"No....I'm not working for you the rest of my life!" Stan told Johnny.

So, Stan graduated and started working at a grocery store. The more he learned about the grocery business, the better his dad's offer sounded.

"OK, let's do it," Stan told Johnny.

And 48 years later, here we are.

Over the years, Johnny Baker, Stan Baker, Butch Baker, Zack Baker and Josh Baker have pitched in to keep the family business thriving.

Johnny's wife, Tennie, served double-duty as full-time office manager and part-time referee before her retirement.

Johnny died on Labor Day in 1999.

Stan and Zack are currently the only employees.

So, what was the secret to success for the business?

"Do your job, do it correctly, be fair to everyone, and the customers will do the rest," remarks Stan.

And what will Stan and Zack miss when the business closes?

"Our customers," they respond in unison, before adding, "but, the paperwork....not so much!"
