Fannin County, Texas -- Bois d'Arc Lake, the first large Texas reservoir to open in more than 30 years, is now open for recreation. Apparently, the opening came Wednesday morning, April 17, 2024, with little fanfare and no advance public information from its operator, North Texas Municipal Water District.
The lack of information did little to slow the steady flow of fishermen into the boat ramp parking lots; they had been checking the water level daily and knew the opening was imminent.
The major purpose of the lake is to supply water for the burgeoning population of North Texas. It was built at a cost of approximately $1.6 billion. North Texas Municipal Water District has been pumping water out of the lake for more than a year.
The 17,000-acre lake has a surface area of 26 square miles. Fishermen have their eye on this lake because Texas Parks & Wildlife Department has made the most of its opportunity to stock Bois d'Arc Lake with the finest genetics available for largemouth bass.
