Bonham City Council recognizes American Legion for Children and Youth Month

Bonham, Texas -- Bonham Mayor H. Compton presided over a regular meeting of Bonham City Council held Monday, April 8, 2024, with councilmembers John Burnett, Tim La Vergne, Michael Evans, Ernie Quintana and Wayne Moore present.

The meeting opened with an invocation by Mark Posey.

Mayor Compton took a moment to introduce Ross Altobelli, the City of Bonham's new Director of Community Development. Mr. Altobelli brings experience gleaned from holding similar positions with the City of Anna and the City of Rowlett.

Bonham City Council approved minutes of the regular meeting on March 11, 2024.

City Council accepted the financial report for the month ending March 31, 2024.

In the segment of the meeting reserved for citizens to speak, Bill Hartnett continued to question city council regarding the city's application of sidewalk and gutter codes.

"When can we expect a written response from city council?" Mr. Hartnett asked. "We would like to have a staff report as soon as possible."

Bonham City Council presented a proclamation to the American Legion for Children and Youth Month.

In 1939, the National Legionnaire newspaper proclaimed that April had become designated as American Legion Child Welfare Month and called upon posts to report their activities throughout the nation. Locally, American Legion Anderson-Roberts Post 283 plays an important role in the community, including helping the Bonham Chamber present the 3rd Annual Easter Egg Hunt in Powder Creek Park.

"This group is always doing something good for our community," remarked Mayor Compton. "It's a pleasure to work with them."

"We are very proud of our organization and our community," stated Post 283 Commander, Wolf Laughing.

City council appointed Allen Sanderson to the Community Services Advisory Council.

Bonham City Council voted to approve an ordinance abandoning and closing the unimproved section of Evans St from 13th St. north on the east side of Block 3, Lot 4, 5, and 6 and the unimproved alley running east and west north of Block 3 Lot 4 being within the James S. Crawford Addition.

City council approved a contract for Election Services between the Fannin County Clerk and the City of Bonham for the May 4, 2024 election.

Bonham City Council entered into executive session to deliberate the purchase, exchange, lease or value of real property as permitted by Texas Government Code §551.072 and to deliberate economic development negotiations as permitted by Texas Government Code §551.087.

City council reconvened in open public session to announce the city will consider offers on 76 acres the city owns on the north side of Lake Bonham.
