Bonham, Texas -- The Friends of Sam Rayburn Board of Directors honored the memories of Dr. Randy McBroom and Barbara Gore, two long-serving Board members, by donating to scholarships in their name.
As Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. McBroom helped foster the relationship between Texas A&M-Commerce, Speaker Rayburn’s alma mater, the Friends of Sam Rayburn and the Sam Rayburn (Library) Museum. He joined the Board of the Friends following his retirement from the University and served until his death in August 2023.
The Friends donated $1,000 to the General Scholarship Fund of Texas A&M-Commerce in Dr. McBroom’s honor.
As a Friends of Sam Rayburn member, Barbara Gore supported the activities of the Rayburn museums long before joining the Friends Board of Directors. She committed her life to educating people, first through her career as a teacher, and then as a volunteer in mentoring programs and at historic sites. In honor of Barbara’s commitment to education and in recognition of her love of Bonham, the Friends of Sam Rayburn offered a one-time scholarship to seniors graduating from Bonham High School in 2024. The Friends of Sam Rayburn are happy to announce that Jagger Lindsey and Reyleigh Shockley were both awarded $500 as recipients of the Barbara Gore Memorial scholarship program.
The Friends of Sam Rayburn is a non-profit organization that supports programs, activities and events at the Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site and the Sam Rayburn Museum. The two historic sites located in Bonham are committed to preserving and promoting the legacy of Speaker Sam Rayburn. The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site is operated by the Texas Historical Commission and the Sam Rayburn Museum is a division of the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, University of Texas at Austin.
