Show runs through Oct.14 at Choctaw Cultural Center

Durant, Oklahoma -- Only a short time remains to see Choctaw artist Carole Ayers’ one-woman show at the Choctaw Cultural Center. Seventeen works make up “Keeping Our Heritage: Choctaw People, Life, and Animal Kinship,” which opened in April and runs through October 14 on the Exhibit Wall of the Center.

Primarily a watercolorist, Ayers also produces museum-quality prints through a process called giclée (pronounced zhee-klay). Her paintings celebrate various aspects of Choctaw heritage and culture. Her Choctaw name, Ohoyo Shilombish, or Spirit Woman, also comes through in some of her storytelling pieces.

The title of the show “Keeping Our Heritage” was suggested by Center Curator Claire Green Young, because it fits the diversity of the collection and Ayers’ understanding and appreciation of Choctaw ways.

“There’s a story behind every picture and pleasant memories associated with it. Painting gives me a peace, except when I can’t get the effect I want. I would encourage everyone to paint, sing, or sculpt more. It is so satisfying to express yourself while at the same time leaving something of yourself to the world.”

Admission to the cultural center is complimentary for members of the Choctaw Nation and those with museum memberships. General admission is $12; active military, veterans, college students, senior citizens 62+, citizens of other tribes, $9; children ages 4-12, CNO associates, $6.

Choctaw Cultural Center is located at 1919 Hina Hanta Way, Durant. Information about the Choctaw Cultural Center and the exhibit is at https://bit.ly/ccc-exhibitions.
