Gift coincides with World Prematurity Day on November 17

Denison, Texas -- Cigna's grassroots knitting and crocheting group, A Common Thread, warmly gave 600 handmade caps to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Texoma Medical Center (TMC) in Denison on World Prematurity Day, Thursday, Nov. 17.

The hats help ill and premature babies in the NICU conserve heat so they can put their energy toward getting better. The caps also provide parents of babies in NICUs with a touch of homemade caring in a stressful situation. In the 10 years since its inception, A Common Thread has sent nearly 25,000 caps to NICUs throughout the country.

“We are so grateful for this heartfelt gift from Cigna employee volunteers who spent countless hours creating caps specially made for our most vulnerable patients,” said Carla Rider, DNP, MBA, BS, RNC-LRN I, Associate Chief Nursing Officer of Texoma Medical Center. “Kind gestures like these certainly mean a lot to our families, as well as the NICU staffers who are working hard to ensure the best outcomes for NICU babies. We here at TMC want to thank the Cigna volunteers for all of their support.”

“As we honor World Prematurity Day, it’s important to remember those families who are doing their best to keep their spirits high while their little ones are healing,” said Dr. Rick Watson, Medical Market Executive for Cigna. “Our goal here at Cigna is to provide whole-person care and wellness, whether it’s for physical or emotional needs. We hope these caps help ease some of the stress by supporting these babies and families during a difficult time.”
