Ceremony at Revolutionary War veteran's gravesite in Bonham set Sept. 11

Bonham, Texas -- The public is invited to a Patriot Grave Marking Ceremony slated for 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 11, 2022 at the gravesite in Bonham of James Carter, a patriot who fought in the Revolutionary War.
The American War for Independence was fought from April 19, 1775 – September 3, 1783 to secure the nation's independence from Great Britain.
James Carter was a member of the North Carolina Militia who would eventually move his family to Texas in 1839. His grave in northeast Bonham is the oldest in the Russell family cemetery, with approximately 25 family members buried nearby.
Carter is one of approximately 85 veterans of the Revolutionary War who were buried in Texas.
The Sons of the American Revolution are cleaning up the Russell family cemetery in preparation for the official grave-marking ceremony coming up on September 11.
The public is asked to access the ceremony by turning east off of Pecan Street onto Legend Avenue and then turning south onto Bois d'Arc Drive. A U.S. flag will mark the access point just before 1104 Bois d'Arc Drive.
There will be no access from Nancy Lea Drive. Please do not park on Nancy Lea Drive or walk across the cattle guard.
Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution and Children of the American Revolution are sponsoring this celebration of the extraordinary life of American patriot James Carter.
