"These cats would not make good pets but are perfect for a barn environment," one organizer said.
The cats have all been spayed or neutered and have had Rabies and FVRCP shots that have all been done by the adoption groups. Other cats come from urban areas where colonies of ferals are in danger.
Barn Cats, Inc. takes these cats and places them in barns, stables, sheds, equestrian centers, and other similar locations throughout North Texas.
A Barn Cats spokesperson said that the organization recently relocated two groups of cats in the Leonard and Farmersville areas.
The organization currently has 37 cats waiting for placement from around the Metroplex. More than 325 cats were relocated in 2004. The cats are placed in cages in the barn for two weeks to one month to get acclimated to the barn environment. At the end of the adjustment period, the cage door is left open and the cats find their hiding places.
All equipment (cages, food, litter, bowls, etc.) is provided by Barn Cats, Inc. The caregiver agrees to refill the food and water and scoop/change the litter for the time they are caged and also continues to feed the cats after they are loose in the barn.
There is no charge for this service. To receive a cat for your barn, call Barn Cats, Inc. 972-315-2875 or info@barncats.org
