Van Alstyne -- Would you like to win a beautiful red, white, and blue handmade quilt?  Entirely hand quilted by experienced quilter Audrey Slack, the Apple Core or Around-the-World quilt will be raffled off on May 2.  All proceeds go to the Friends of the Library to support the Van Alstyne Public Library expansion project.  Tickets are $1.00 each and may be purchased from members of the Friends of the Library or at the Friends Community Breakfast on the first Saturday of each month.  The quilt is on display during the breakfast.

The Library now has music CD’s for patrons to check out.  Donations of CD’s were provided to Texas libraries through settlement of a lawsuit in the music industry.  The Van Alstyne Library received approximately 180 CDs.  Whatever your fancy, from rock to country to easy listening and classical, you will find something to enjoy.  CDs are checked out for two weeks at a time and may be renewed just like books.

Do you like to drink coffee or tea while you read your newspaper or magazines?  Do you love the smell of coffee even if you don’t like the taste?  You can indulge your wish for a cup of coffee or tea now at the public library.  Bring your own mug or use one of our disposable cups.  You can bring your own special brand of tea or specialty instant coffee.  We’ll provide the hot water, a selection of teas, and a pot of brewed coffee.  The drinks are free but donations are accepted.  We do ask you not to drink coffee or tea while using the computers – spilled drinks don’t mix well with keyboards.

What else is new at the library?  Books of course!  We always try to keep new books arriving, either for children, teens or adults.  This week we have added the 2005 Physicians Desk Reference, the 2004 Job Search Handbook for Educators, 2005 College Board  Scholarship Handbook, The 2005 College Handbook, Peterson’s 2005 College Money Handbook, National Geographic’s The Making of the National Parks, and the National Debate Topic Special Report: U.S. Peacekeeping Foreign Policy.

Other recent non-fiction additions include:  2005 World Almanac, World Almanac for Kids 2005, Scholastic Book of World Records 2005, 2005 Guinness World Records, Guinness Book of records 2004, Young Person’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, and America’s Top 300 Jobs.
