Fannin County, Texas -- Rob Wiggins (Bonham, State Champion High Jump), Wade Hayes (Bonham, State Champion Pole Vault) and the 2013 Trenton Tigers State Semifinalist Baseball Team will be inducted into the Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame Saturday, January 29, 2022.

The 2022 Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet is slated for 6:30 p.m. January 29. Tickets for adults are $15 and $5 for children 12 and under (children 5 and under free). Tickets sold at the door only.

Robert Derick Wiggins is a 1989 graduate of Bonham High School. In high school he excelled in two sports, football and track.

Rob was a key factor on the Bonham Purple Warrior football team his junior and senior years as quarterback. In his junior year the team was Bi-District Champs. In his senior year he carried the ball 130 times for 615 yards and passed for 551 yards. Bonham won the District 9-3A Championship. He was picked by Sherman Democrat All-Area Football Team as First Team Quarterback 10-AAA.

In varsity track, Rob competed in the 400 meter dash, 1600 meter relay and high jump. His team was District Champs in 11-AAA Mile Relay in 1987 and he was a District Champ in the 400 meter dash in 1989. His senior year he came in second place in the Regional II 3A Track and Field Meet in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet 7 inches, which led him to the state competition in Austin, Texas.

Injuries had kept Wiggins from performing at his best during the weeks leading up to the state meet, but when the big day arrived and the other competitors began to falter, Rob continued. He cleared 6 feet 10 inches to improve on his personal best by two inches and won the Class 3A High Jump competition.

More importantly for his future, he hopefully caught the eye of a college coach who would allow him to continue to compete while gaining a higher form of education. This coach was Ken Garland from the University of North Texas in Denton who awarded Rob a scholarship in Track and Field. Rob lettered his freshman year and continued competing in High Jump.

Rob had always had a desire to participate in the decathlon, he was red shirted his junior year to train for the competition. The ten events consisted of the Long Jump, Shot-Put, High Jump, Pole Vault, Discus, Javelin, 1500 meters, 110 Hurdles, 400 meters and 100 meters. Most of the events were new to him. In his senior year at North Texas he came in fifth at the Southland Conference Decathlon Competition held at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. At this time he held the school record in decathlon.

Rob graduated in the spring of 1995 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. After obtaining his first degree he decided to attend Grayson County Jr. College and earn an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Turf Grass Management.

Rob was named Director of Agronomy at Stonebriar Country Club in 2016. He began his career at ClubCorp in 2000 as Gold Course Superintendent.

Wade Hayes

Wade Hayes was born on August 14, 1987.  His parents are Kevin and Donna Hayes. Wade is a native of Bonham and graduated from Bonham High School in 2005. During his time at BHS, he was a three year letterman in baseball, track and a two year letterman in football. In 2004 he received football honors of All Texoma Cornerback, First Team All-District Cornerback and Second Team All-District Wide Receiver.

In Track and Field, Wade was named the Track “MVP” in 2003, 2004 and 2005. He was a Regional Qualifier in pole vault and 4x200 meter relay. Wade qualified for the State Meet in the pole vault as a junior, finishing 4th. In 2005, Wade was a Regional Qualifier in the 4x200 meter relay and 200 meter dash as well as State Qualifier once again in the pole vault.

At the 2005 State track meet in Austin, Wade cleared 15’9” to win the Class 3A State title. The following summer, Wade qualified for the Junior Olympics held in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Wade Hayes

In 2005, Wade signed with Division 1 Track and Field program, the University of Texas – Arlington on a pole vault scholarship. At UT Arlington Wade was a five-time Southland Conference Champion in the pole vault, a four-time Regional Qualifier and National Championships Finalist in 2010. Wade set the UT Arlington indoor school record with a mark of 17’3”. He was selected to the Southland Conference All Conference Team eight consecutive times and to the Southland Conference Academic Honor Roll three times.

In 2010, Wade graduated from the University of Texas-Arlington with his bachelor’s degree and went on to complete his Masters of Education with an emphasis in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri.

In 2013, Wade was named to the Southland Conference All-Time Track and Field Team, a list that recognized the best athletes in the league’s first 50 years.

Currently, Wade works at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona as a University Admissions Manager.

2013 Trenton Tigers Baseball Team

The 2013 Trenton Tigers Baseball Team was the 1A District 16 Champions with a district record of 13-1. They finished the season as 1A State Semifinalist with an overall record of 29-8.

The ream consisted of Wyatt Beezley, Bailey Burks, Hunter Cates, Ryan Conrad, Craig Hill, Dylan Huff, Cody Lambright, Dylan McCarley, Billy Pilkinton, Garrett Puyear, Brandon Stone, Slater Stone, Heath Strickland, Kever Wylie and Kylie Wylie. The Head coach was Josh Weger with Asst Coach Louis Park and Asst Coach Stuart Slackey. 

The Managers were Nick Jones and Ben Minter.

Playing in 37 games the Tigers held a .349 batting average on the season with a .386 average for district play, while holding their opponents to a .194 season average and .108 district batting average. The Tigers scored 310 runs on the season with 141 of those coming in district play. The Tigers hit 11 homeruns on the season. They gave up only 141 runs on the season with 50 of those during district play. The team ERA was 2.177 for the season but only .834 during District. The pitchers garnered 333 season strikeouts with 151 coming in district.

Being the district champions, Trenton got a 1st round bye in the 2013 State Baseball playoffs. In the area round they defeated Wortham in 2 games 8-5 and 12-2, Regional Quarterfinals the Tigers defeated Italy 2-0 and 8-2, the Regional Semifinals went to a game three with Trenton winning the series (0-10, 13-10, 11-1).

At the State Tournament in the State Semifinal game Trenton was defeated by Stamford 9-4. There were 6 players from this team that went on to play baseball at the collegiate level.

The 2013 Trenton Tigers represented Fannin County well by not only playing at a high level, but also showing great sportsmanship and a respect for their opponents, the officials and the game.
