Saturday, November 6

McKinney, Texas (Nov. 5, 2021) - Celebrate Texas Arbor Day and help Keep McKinney Beautiful by participating in the Restore the Canopy, Wilson Creek Tree Planting Event: A Riparian Restoration on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. At the event, 800 seedlings and 870 young trees will be planted near Wilson Creek, and volunteers are needed to help improve water quality and positively impact the environment.

The event is a partnership between Texas A&M Forest Service, the North Texas Municipal Water District, City of McKinney, McKinney Parks Foundation, and several local stakeholders. The planting is made possible through funding from the Coors Change the Course Partnership.

Volunteers are recommended to bring a shovel and wear closed-toe shoes.

Planting trees at the location is one of the most impactful and cost-effective ways to protect critical water resources. Arbor Day is an annual observance across the country that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. November is the perfect time to plant trees in Texas, so the state celebrates Arbor Day on the first Friday of the month each year.

“Establishing a forested riparian buffer on a stream like Wilson Creek is critical because it will help stabilize the eroding stream banks and filter and trap unwanted pollutants from urban stormwater runoff,” said Mac Martin, Texas A&M Forest Service Urban Forestry Partnership Coordinator. “This investment in reforestation not only serves the ecosystem but will also protect crucial drinking water supply to Lavon Lake, which serves clean water to 2 million North Texas residents.”

Texas A&M Forest Service will live stream the Texas Arbor Day celebration from the host city of Weatherford, Texas and six other Arbor Day events across the state on Friday, Nov. 5, at 9:30 a.m. Join the live stream on Facebook at https://bit.ly/3ACF8UG.
