Texas Department of State Health Services COVID-19 report

Austin, Texas -- It was another encouraging report by Texas Department of State Health Services on Sunday that indicates the daily number of new cases, positivity rate and hospitalization numbers are approaching levels not seen since before the summer surge of COVID-19 cases.

There were 2,800 daily new cases in the latest data release that also listed 64 newly reported fatalities.

As of September 5, the seven-day positivity rate had dropped to 7.54%, the lowest seven-day positivity rate since June 17.

Texas hospitals currently have 3,715 new cases of COVID-19 cases. The last time that Texas hospitals had fewer COVID-19 patients was June 22 when hospitals had 3,711 patients. The surge topped out at 10,893 COVID-19 patients only a month later on July 22 before beginning a steady decline to the current level.

The estimated number of active cases dipped from 83,625 in Saturday's report to 81,426 on Sunday, a drop of 2,199 active cases in a 24-hour period.

The state has reported a total of 638,310 confirmed cases, with an estimated 543,412 recoveries and 13,472 fatalities related to COVID-19.

In South Texas, Harris County dipped back under the 1,000 threshold with 928 newly confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus.

In North Texas, Tarrant County was the hotspot with 249 new cases and Dallas County had 203 new cases.

Denton County reported 74 new cases and Collin County was notified of 57 newly confirmed cases.

Grayson County was advised of 18 new cases and Lamar County had six new cases.
