Bonham Warriors drop to 1-1 with loss to Van Alstyne

Bonham, Texas -- Bonham junior quarterback Mason Rodriguez completed 10-of-24 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns, but Van Alstyne's Gaven Montgomery and Jaden Mahan both rushed for three TDs in a 30-point win for the Panthers.

In the opening moments, Bonham traded touchdowns with their Class 4A opponent and the Warriors had an early 8-6 lead before Van Alstyne took a 51-8 advantage into the locker room at halftime and finished the night with a 54-24 win on the road.

With the Panther defense keying on Bonham sophomore running back Jeren Ross, Rodriguez was also the top ground gainer with seven carries for 14 yards.

Tyler Addie ran twice for 11 yards and Brant Stuber had 10 yards on eight carries. Ross wrapped up a tough night with rushes for nine yards.

Stuber snagged a pair of passes for 84 yards and dragged defenders down to the Van Alstyne five-yard line after a reception to set up Bonham's first TD.

Nick Rhinehart had three catches for 49 yards and two touchdowns.

Cade Bowser was on the receiving end of four passes for 44 yards and one touchdown.

Bonham freshman Hunter Haglund grabbed one pass for nine yards.

On defense it was another freshman leading the charge as Angel Esquivel had a team-high 11 tackles, including three tackles for a loss and Esquivel also forced one fumble.

Ayden Leatherwood was a force on the defensive side of the ball with nine tackles.

Stuber had another strong performance on defense with eight tackles.

Bowser had three tackles.

Haglund, Addie and Ashton Gurley all contributed a pair of tackles.

Rhinehart, Jesse Koontz, Aiden Andrew, Jacob Gordon, Colton Young, Carson McClain, Ryder Soliday and Bradley Carruth were each credited with one tackle.
