DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly has been a staple of opera repertory since its resoundingly successful debut in 1904. Beginning Nov. 14 , the University of North Texas Opera Theatre will present three performances of this opera-lover's delight for Metroplex audiences.

Performances are scheduled for 3 p.m. on Nov. 14 and Nov. 21 (Sundays), and 8 p.m. Nov. 19 (Friday) in the Lyric Theatre of the Murchison Performing Arts Center, which is located along Interstate 35 East at North Texas Boulevard on the UNT campus.

Tickets range in price from $15 to $35, and may be purchased in advance by calling the box office at (940) 369-7802.

Perhaps the world's most famous opera, Madama Butterfly tells the tragic tale of a young geisha girl and her love for a lieutenant in the United States Navy. This full production features a full orchestra, rear projections on three giant screens, authentic Japanese kimonos, state of the art lighting, and English supertitles projected over the stage. The UNT cast, which is composed of experienced professional singers and voice students, will sing the opera in Italian.

Madama Butterfly will be directed by Paula Homer, director of the UNT Opera Theatre. Music Director Stephen Dubberly will conduct the UNT Chamber Orchestra from the Lyric Theatre's orchestra pit.
