Celeste, Texas -- The Ector Eagles defeated the Gunter Tigers in the boys championship game at the 2019 Celeste Basketball Tournament.
Ector's road to the title game began with a thrilling one-point overtime win against Leonard, 38-37, in the opening round of the tournament, with eight Ector Eagles scratching the scorebook. Joey Grijalva made the game-winning lay-up in OT with 0.1 seconds to play. Leonard's Jaylen Duncan put up 24 points.
In the second round, the Eagles beat Boles, 69-41, with Nathan Essary, Corey Whitburn, Austin Earl and Kenny Nelms all finishing in double figures. Nine Ector players scored in the contest.
In the tournament title game, Kenny Nelms scored 17 and Austin Earl finished with 15 points to lead Ector to a 64-52 win over Gunter. Noel Cannaday was also in double digits with 10 points, Garen Norwood knocked down nine points, Nathan Essary put up eight points and Kyrin Beach contributed five points.
Austin Earl was named tournament MVP and Kenny Nelms played his way onto the Celeste All-Tournment Team.
The Ector Eagles are now 6-3 on the season.
