Bonham ISD Recognizes Outstanding Teachers of the Year

Bonham ISD held the annual Staff Service Awards luncheon on Friday, June 5, 2015. Employees receiving service awards are nominated and chosen by the employees in the district, and presented an award at the luncheon by school administration.

Staff recognition recipients were given a personalized award, staff service year recipients were given a keychain signifying their dedication to the district, and retirees were presented a Bonham ISD watch.

Superintendent Dr. Marvin Beaty welcomed the crowd, recapped the highlights of the year, and introduced all award recipients.

Assistant Superintendents Dr. Faith-Ann Cheek and Kelly Trompler presented the awards to the deserving recipients from across the District and the community.

The Bonham High School Teacher of the Year is Brandi Holcomb. Brandi currently teaches Geometry and Pre-AP Geometry and remediates for Algebra I and has taught various math classes in her 16 years of experience in the classroom. She is the UIL academic advisor and Student Council advisor. She is very involved in everything at BHS, hosting every pep rally and was even the joke of the week sponsor.

The L.H. Rather Teacher of the Year is Jan Woodruff. Jan is a master teacher that holds high expectations for her students and creates a sense of community and belonging in her classroom. Jan teaches 8th grade Math and Algebra I and has been with BISD for 21 years and has 28 years teaching experience in her career.

The I.W. Evans Teacher of the Year is Life Skills teacher Amberly Kelton. Amberly began her teaching career just a few short years ago and truly has a heart for her special kids. She makes every decision for her students with love and care, and ensures that she is an advocate for the children making them visible around the campus and includes them in all activities with the school. She works tirelessly to plan interesting activities for them and does everything she can to make them successful.

The Finley-Oates Teacher of the Year is second grade teacher Sherry Minnick. Mrs. Minnick has been teaching with us for 22 years and goes above and beyond in everything she does. Sherry puts her heart and soul into her work and has a passion for the students she teaches. She is not only a great motivator and encourager for her students, but she is also one for her peers. Mrs. Minnick comes early and stays late and always puts her students' needs first.

The Bailey Inglish Teacher of the Year is Dani Jones. Mrs. Jones has been teaching at BISD for 8 years and is a classroom teacher of very active 3 year olds. She does a great job working with the Special Education team to include the children with disabilities in her classroom. She is always willing to go the extra mile to help her students, their families, and her coworkers. Mrs. Jones volunteers to help at all of the evening parent activities and maintains a warm and inviting classroom. Dani has a true passion for teaching young children.

The Secondary Inspirational Leader of the Year is Life Skills teacher Cherie Frazier. She began her teaching career at L.H. Rather Jr. High in the fall of 1983 and works diligently to ensure her students learn functional academics, life skills, and pre-vocational skills. She goes above and beyond for kids each and every day. She is their biggest advocate, and genuinely cares about each and every one of them. Cherie has high expectations for her kids and expects nothing less than their absolute best!

The Elementary Inspirational Leader of the Year is Wallese Anthony. Wallese has spent her last 8 years in education with us here at I.W. Evans teaching 5th grade. Wallese is constantly thinking about how to make instruction better and reach more children. She is willing to try new things and step out of the box and the children know she has their best interests at heart.

 Wallese is always helpful, friendly, and encouraging to the adults around her as well. After 19 years in education, Anthony is retiring and excited to spend time with her 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. We will truly miss Mrs. Anthony and wish her the very best in her retirement.

The Secondary Rookie of the Year is 7th grade English Language Arts teacher Tiffany Bolton. Tiffany entered the world of education this year and has done a phenomenal job with her students. She is a skilled leader with a strong rapport with her students and colleagues.

Tiffany collaborates with her fellow teachers, has an engaging teaching style, and effective classroom management skills. When entering her classroom, her passion for teaching is evident. During her first year teaching, she also took on the responsibility of Yearbook adviser.

The Elementary Rookie of the Year is Lupe Gomez. Lupe did a fantastic job in her first year as a 3rd grade dual language teacher. Gomez is always willing to try new things and is excited about teaching. She always has a smile on her face and is willing to go the extra mile.

Communication is a major strength for Lupe; she updates her facebook page and website often with pictures and information about what is going on in her class and has a wonderful rapport with her students and parents.
