Gunter, Texas — The Gunter Robotics team will compete at the state level in the Texas BEST (Boosting Engineering Science and Technology) Regional Robotics Championship Nov. 8 and 9 at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Winning high school and middle school teams from across Texas and New Mexico will vie for top honors in the competition, which this year tasks students with constructing a “Gatekeeper 2013” robot that can collect “transistors” to make logic gates, integrated circuits and a central processing unit.

The Gunter team finished third in the Collin County hub robot competition to advance to the state round.

“I’m very proud of these kids,” said faculty sponsor Mike Bessonett. “They had six weeks to design, construct and test the robot, as well as prepare a project summary notebook, oral presentation and table display. And many of these students also were involved in other school activities. This is a very hard-working bunch.”

Twenty-seven middle and high school students comprised the Gunter Robotics squad, which competed against 23 other teams.

“The Collin County hub is very competitive and our kids did well facing off against much larger schools,” Bessonett said.

Gunter hasn’t competed in the state round of competition since 2010, missing out by one place in both 2011 and 2012. This is the 15th time since 1993 Gunter has advanced to state, winning the Governors Award and moving to national competition in 1995.

2013 Gunter Robotics - Gunter ISD high school and middle school Robotics students celebrate after winning third in the robot competition in the recent 2013 Collin County Hub Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology (BEST) event. The win advances the team to state competition Nov. 8 and 9 at the University of Texas at Dallas.

There are 14 BEST hubs in the Texas region, with 46 hubs and more than 850 teams across 19 states. The organization began in Grayson County in 1993 as a single event for high schools.
