Denison -- Bricks are being sold now through July 4 for the Eisenhower Veterans Monument at Loy Lake Park.

In February 2011, a 16' bust of former President and Five Star General Dwight David Eisenhower was erected.  The statue is the centerpiece for the Eisenhower Veterans Monument located at the entrance to Loy Lake Park.  The ground surrounding the bust is paved with engraved bricks, and brick sales will continue through July 4 for installation by October.

Eisenhower’s birthday will be celebrated on October 12, and we will dedicate the newly placed bricks at that time along with landscaping and a Purple Hearts bench.  We will also honor our WWII veterans at the dedication. In order to obtain names of the veterans, we ask that they contact Donna Dow, at 903-464-4452 or ddow@cityofdenison.com with their name, address, and phone so we can issue an invitation.

Bricks are $70 for veterans and $100 for non-veterans. The forms can be found at www.denisontexas.com. The website also hosts a brick locator for those who already have bricks at the site.

We are also looking for veterans willing to share their experiences through our oral history project. We will interview them and provide a transcription of the interview to be followed by a copy of the edited interview. To make this oral history project, we are looking for volunteers to transcribe, edit video, interview, or serve as a camera operator.

As part of the Eisenhower’s Birthday Weekend, we are looking for photos of all our Veterans who have served in the military (currently or past). We need framed 8 x 10’s that need not be returned. They will be placed on a wall of honor and in Downtown businesses during the birthday weekend, and we would like to have their name, dates of service, rank, and location(s) served attached to the back of the frame.  Contact information should be included in case of questions. They can be delivered to City Hall, 500 W. Chestnut, between the hours of 8 and 5 Monday – Friday.
