Cassie Neel and Sydney Brummett represented Whitewright High School at the State UIL Tennis Championships on April 29 at College Station.

The best 8 teams in Texas from division 2A were drawn without seeds pitting #1’s against #2’s from regional results and separating teams from the same regions in top and bottom brackets.  Whitewright vs. Edgewood in the quarters was a battle of wills with each team holding on till the end, but  Neel/Brummett surged at the end of both sets to defeat Cates/Douglas 7-6(1) 6-4.

Whitewright vs. Wall in the semifinal concluded the season for Neel/Brummett but not without a valiant comeback effort.  Adams/Collett were up a set with a 4-2 lead in the second when Whitewright found their footing and rallied to a tie breaker.  Then Wall regained control to win 6-2 7-6(3) and went on to become the state champions over Lago Vista’s Mumford/Wheeler 6-3 6-7(4) 6-3.

Congratulations to Cassie and Sydney for a phenomenal season record of 28-2 with 10 medals each.  They received 6 gold medals and 1 silver in the preseason, a gold for district, a gold for regional, and a bronze medal for state!
