The City of Pottsboro has long been known as the "Gateway to Texoma." Now with the advent of State Highway 289 (Preston Road) on the west side of town bringing more traffic from the Metroplex and TxDOT renovating FM 120 to the east between Denison and Pottsboro, access to Pottsboro and Lake Texoma has improved drastically.

TxDOT crews began work on FM 120 April 30, 2012, and an impressive thoroughfare is quickly taking shape.

"For many years, FM120 was virtually the only access to Pottsboro," said Pottsboro Mayor Frank Budra. "For those who have lived here for some years, the current FM120 is a far cry from 'what used to be.'"

Based on contractor schedule, the first layer of FM 120 should be complete by the end of the month, with the second layer completed by the end of June.  Limits of the project are from Spur 316 in Pottsboro to Denison (where the divided highway ends and concrete pavement starts).

"FM 120 has gone from two lanes to four, and with the latest smooth, efficient re-paving moving along at a remarkable pace, FM120 has always been our 'gateway' highway," says Mayor Budra.

While FM 120 is undeniably a vital link from the Denison area, transportation options have increased greatly over the past two years for Pottsboro residents and visitors traveling to this "Gateway to Texoma."

"Fast forward to 2009 and 2011," Budra explains.  "With the wonderful upgrade to FM1417 and the long-awaited completion of State Highway 289, suddenly it seems as though all roads lead to Pottsboro! When we see the three well-made, well-maintained highways  -- thanks to TxDOT -- and recognize the planning and foresight that went into making all three of those roads a reality, and prepare for the groundbreaking for Brookshire's at the intersection of FM120 and SH289, it seems certain that all of those roads will benefit Pottsboro for many years to come."

TxDOT spokesman Tray Turner said there will always be one lane open in each direction as construction continues on FM 120, so detours will not be required for this project.
