Bonham -- Special guest, The Honorable Ralph Hall will present flags that have hung over the White House or Capitol in Washington D.C. to six young men who have achieved the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts– that of Eagle Scout. On Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 12 Noon, friends and family will gather at the Bonham Ward building of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints to honor these young men. The church is located at 1540 S. Hwy. 78 in Bonham, Texas.
The year 2012 is the 100th anniversary of the Eagle Scout Award. Only five percent of the boys who enter the scouting program complete all the requirements to reach Eagle. Each candidate must complete 21 merit badges, serve in leadership roles within the troop and complete an “Eagle Project”.
The following Boy Scouts have completed the requirements to join the elite group of Eagle Scouts: Joseph Barnhurst, son of Chris and Stephanie Barnhurst of Bailey, built wheelchair ramps in local communities; Tristan Egan, son Jason and Laurie Egan of Telephone, painted a gymnasium for the Project United After school Program in Honey Grove, TX; Joseph Herd, son of Lee and Lovie Herd of Whitewright, built a gazebo in an Anna City park; John Pollock established a collection point for American and Texas flags in need of retirement and Stephen Pollock built owl boxes at the Caddo National Grassland, both are sons of Michael and Valerie Pollock of Leonard; Ty Slaughter, son Pete and Pam Slaughter of Bailey, built a loafing shed for Hanna's Horseshoes of Hope.
An Eagle project is a massive undertaking for a young scout as demonstrated by the projects these young men completed. Since its formation in 1999, Troop 1910 has advanced 23 young men to the rank of Eagle. The public is welcome to join this impressive event.
