BONHAM – Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center invites the public to participate in open-house activities February 13-17 during National Salute to Veteran Patients Week.
"National Salute to Veteran Patients gives everyone a chance to let those know who have given so much to our nation that they are not forgotten," said Director Jeffery L. Milligan. "We've invited local celebrities, elected officials, and other groups to visit during the week. We want people of all ages to bring Valentine’s Day cheer to our patients.”
Milligan said he hopes visitors will also learn more about the important roles volunteers play at the medical center throughout the year and perhaps pursue volunteer opportunities.
"We have nearly 400 volunteers at Bonham who are an important part of our health care team and the National Salute program is a great way for people to learn more about helping the veterans we serve here at the medical center," Milligan said. “Visitors are often surprised at how varied our volunteer opportunities are.”
Citizens young and old are once again sending Valentine’s Day cards and letters to VA medical centers across the country simply addressed “Dear Veteran.” “We get thousands of valentines from the community, and the hand-made cards from elementary school students is a great way to get the children involved and aware of what veterans have done for our country,” Milligan said.
National Salute Week activities at Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center include veteran service organizations, community groups, and dignitaries sharing valentines with patients.

Individuals or groups wishing to participate in National Salute to Veteran Patients Week should call the Voluntary Service office at (903) 583-6282.
VA North Texas Health Care System serves over 110,000 patients each year, delivering over one million outpatient visits to veterans in 38 North Texas counties and two counties in southern Oklahoma.
