Red River Unitarian Universalist Church in Denison will celebrate African American History Month on February 12 at 11:15 a.m. by seeing a sermon on video, "Spiritual Songs for Healing Grace."  Preaching and singing the sermon is Dr. Melanie L. Harris, Assistant Professor of Religion and Ethics at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth and an accomplished singer.

Dr. Harris uses her classical vocal training to promote multi-faith dialogue, compassion, peace and justice, and has preached throughout the U.S. as an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

At TCU, she teaches in the areas of Christian Social Ethics, Womanist Religious Thought, African American Literature and Religion, and Media and Religion.  She is author of the book, Gifts of Virtue: Alice Walker and Womanist Ethics.

A former broadcast journalist, Dr. Harris worked as a news producer and news writer for ABC, CBS, and NBC news affiliates in Atlanta and Denver.

She holds the Ph.D. and master of philosophy degrees from Union Theological Seminary in New York City; the master of divinity from Iliff School of Theology in Denver, CO; and the B.A. from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA.

The video was produced in February, 2011, when Dr. Harris presented her sermon at Pathways UU Church in Southlake, TX.

All are welcome to view the video, and a nursery is provided.  RRUU meets at 515 Burnett Ave. in Denison.
