FORT WORTH—Jonathan Unglaub, associate professor of fine arts at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, will present a free lecture titled “Poussin’s Ordination for Cassiano dal Pozzo: Ordaining Men and Ordering Nature” on Friday, February 17, at 6 p.m., in the Museum auditorium.
This lecture considers the Kimbell Art Museum’s newest acquisition, The Sacrament of Ordination: Christ Presenting the Keys to Saint Peter, by Nicolas Poussin. Unglaub will discuss this painting in the context of Poussin’s two series of the Seven Sacraments, each a monument of religious painting by an artist best known for his images of classical mythology and ancient history. Poussin approaches sacred history through the lens of early Christian archaeology. He perfected the grand classical landscape, one of his supreme legacies to the history of art.
Unglaub is the author of “Poussin and the Poetics of Painting: Pictorial Narrative and the Legacy of Tasso” (Cambridge University Press, 2006), some half dozen articles on Poussin, and a monograph on the painter.
No reservations necessary. Admission to the lecture is free.
