Bonham High School graduate and United States Naval Academy Midshipman First Class Trey Wheeler, class of 2012, has been accepted into the Navy Pilot warfare community.
On November 30, 2011, all Naval Academy midshipmen first class (seniors) were informed of their specific Navy and Marine Corps career assignments. Service selection is one of the most important events for every midshipman, as it determines the career path they will pursue for at least the next 5 years.
Ever since seeing the launch of Space Shuttle Columbia when he was nine years old, Trey has dreamed of being a pilot and, eventually, an astronaut. Most children have similar dreams which fade as they grow older, but Trey refused to let go of his dream. Instead, with the support of his family, he embarked on a diligent path to realize his dreams. He attended Space Camp, became an Eagle Scout at age 13, was a three-sport varsity athlete in high school, and salutatorian of his high school graduating class. That diligence as a youth lead to an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, from which he will graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Astrophysics and be commissioned into the U.S. Navy as an Ensign.
Trey Wheeler will graduate from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD on May 29, 2012 and will be commissioned as an Officer in the U.S. Navy. Each graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy successfully completes four years of intensive academic, physical and professional training, resulting in a Bachelor of Science Degree.
As a graduate of the Naval Academy, Trey will have completed a four-year, total immersion program where a strong, balanced academic program, focused on the educational needs of the Navy and Marine Corps, is superimposed on a strict, professional military training environment emphasizing the development of leadership skills. Following graduation, Trey will attend Initial Flight School as he begins the two year training program to become a Navy Pilot.
Considered one of the top educational institutions in the country, the U.S. Naval Academy was founded in 1845 and has graduated more than 60,000 men and women as Naval and Marine Corps Officers. Its graduates include 4,000 Admirals and Generals, one President, 200 members of Congress, three Governors, 73 Medal of Honor winners, one Nobel Prize winner, and 40 Astronauts.
Along the way, Trey never gave into doubt and never lost faith that he would reach his goals. His family and friends supported him every step of the way and take particular joy in seeing his goals achieved.
