I have noticed that over the years the wheelchair ramp area in front of Whitlock’s Pawn and Los Amigos has been used by many as a regular parking space. On several occasions I have called the Bonham Police Department and they have sent an officer out to check out the situation. On a number of these occasions, the police officer has gone into the two businesses and asked that the individuals move their vehicles. Several have given the reason for parking their as being handicapped themselves, or just running into the store for a minute.
This is very frustrating for folks in our town that use wheelchairs to get around, and they have to either go down to 5th street or 6th street to use the ramp if they have no one with them to jump the curb. I think the City of Bonham should mark this spotted and several others in town clearly as No Parking Zones and enforce them with tickets and such. I can’t tell how many times that I have been to Los Amigos and had to help my spouse jump the curb to get into the place. This is one of my greatest pet peeves. As matter of fact, we make a joke of this petting my peeve every time we go there for dinner, but it is no laughing matter. It is pure inconsideration of the people that do it toward those that are in need of these ramps.
I am hoping the city council and police chief will see this letter and do something permanent about this situation.
Thank you,
Danny Loyd
