Both of the 7th/8th Grade basketball teams from Tom Bean Middle School played games in Pottsboro on Thursday night . It was the first game for both teams since the end of Christmas break.
The 7th grade "A" team played against a previously undefeated Pottsboro team in what was the most exciting game of the season to date. The Tomcats started off strong but due to a lackluster performance in the second quarter they trailed at half-time by a score of 16-12.
In the second half, the Tomcats came out on fire from 3 point land and managed to regain the lead 23-20 going into the 4th quarter. Pottsboro had a three-point lead with six seconds left before point guard Keoni Puana hit a deep three-pointer right before the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Tomcats were able to finish the game on a 12-6 scoring run and win the game by a final score of 46-40.
Offensively the Tomcats were led by Payton Jones with 17 points, Keoni Puana with 10 points, Garrett Gomez with nine points and Tyler Goff with eight points. Defensive standouts were Carter Khoury, Jacob Miller, Ben Peeples, and Josh Goss.
The 7th grade "B" team got off to a rough start in the first half, and found themselves down by a wide margin at halftime. In the second half, the Tomcats played significantly better and were able to make things much more difficult for the Cardinals. The Tomcats ultimately came up short but showed great character in the loss and continued to play hard throughout the contest.
The 8th grade boys basketball team lost to Pottsboro's squad in a 47-20 contest Thursday evening at Pottsborro. The loss moves their overall record to 1-4 on the season.
Offensively, Daniel Jackson led all scorers with 13 total points on the night, including a 3 pointer just before the half-time break. Clayton Stephens had 4 points, Austin Wilson had 2, and Brady Kannady added a free throw to round out the scoring for the Tomcats.
