SHERMAN, Texas – Chris Melton scored with 6:05 left to play in double overtime to give the Austin College men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Sewanee and its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory of the year on Sunday afternoon. The ‘Roos are now 5-5-2 overall and 1-3 in conference play with the win.

The ’Roos and Tigers battled back and forth all day long in a hard fought game that saw Sewanee take a 9-6 shot advantage in the opening half and the ‘Roos respond by out-shooting the Tigers 10-4 after the break, but neither team was able to find the net in regulation.

In the first overtime both teams attempted two shots but once again were unable to score, and after a lightning delay halted the game for 30 minutes at the start of the second overtime, Mason Waddell launched a pass down the sideline for Melton, who was able to loft the ball over the outstretched hands of Sewanee keeper Conrad Bandoroff in the 104th minute to give Austin College the win.

Both Bandoroff and Grant Gosselin made four saves on the day as the ‘Roos owned a 19-15 shot advantage overall.

Austin College heads to Colorado Springs, Colorado this weekend to take on Colorado College on Friday afternoon before facing off against Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas on Sunday.

Austin College women’s soccer falls to Sewanee

SHERMAN, Texas – After taking a 1-0 halftime lead, visiting Sewanee scored twice in the first four minutes after the break to extend the margin to three and the Austin College women’s soccer team was unable to overcome the deficit despite a pair of late goals. Austin College is now 6-5 overall and 2-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the defeat.

Jamie Samociuk put Sewanee on top early when she punched in a rebound of a Kabler Colhoun shot in the 14th minute of action and the Tigers used a 12-7 shot advantage to grab the lead heading into halftime. It didn’t take long in the second half for Sewanee to build on that lead, with Samociuk scoring again, this time on a feed from Faith Spencer just 1:55 into the half, and just 1:21 later Bess Goodman scored on a cross from Colhoun to make it a 3-0 game.

Lauren Scott put the ‘Roos on the board on an assist from Kelsey D’Amore in the 73rd minute, and Austin College had one late chance for a miracle after Natalie Nelms scored on a feed from Maddy Millender with 11 seconds left but Sewanee was able to run out the clock to hang on for the win.

Sewanee held a 25-15 shot advantage in the match and got four saves from Megan Poole, while Maya Warnock stopped 11 shots in goal for the ‘Roos.

Austin College is on the road for their lone game this week, a trip to Conway, Arkansas to take on Hendrix College next Sunday.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
