BHS Ag mechanics team participated in Grayson County College's first annual Welding Rodeo contest this past Friday and Saturday.  The team consisted of Derrell Hall, Dakota Taylor, Chris Edwards and Zack Jordan.  The BHS team competed against S&S High School, Gainesville High School and Denison High School.

The first part of the contest consisted of a group project.  The students had to design and fabricate a sculpture out of the scrap metal materials that were at the contest site.  This is similar to the television show Junkyard Wars.  The theme for this group project was anything Texas.  The BHS team chose to build a Texas Cowboy.

The BHS Team received second place in the group contest with each student receiving a $250 scholarship.  The contest was judged by the art department at Grayson County College.  The students also competed in an individual welding contest.  This contest was judged strictly based on the individual students MIG welding abilities and oxyacetylene cutting abilities.

All four of the BHS students were praised for their welding abilities by the college instructors.  Dakota Taylor placed 2nd in this contest and won a $500 welding tool kit that included an auto darkening welding helmet.

The students had a blast getting to participate in this contest and learned a lot of welding pointers to improve their welding skills.  All four of these young men plan on pursuing a career in the welding field.
