STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Southeastern recovered from a slow start and got a half-court buzzer-beater from Jasmine Hughey to upend previously undefeated Tarleton State in a Lone Star Conference crossover matchup on Thursday night in Stephenville, Texas.
The Savage Storm move to 5-1 on the season with its fourth-straight win and will have a rare open weekend to soak it in before hosting Texas A&M-Kingsville on Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. in Bloomer Sullivan Arena. The TexAnns, who entered the contest receiving votes in the top 25 poll, fall to 4-1 on the year.
SE trailed by four points with 1:27 to play, but a pair of Whitney Coffey free throws cut the deficit to two-points with 1:12 left on the clock.
A Hughey turnover with 11 seconds remaining looked to end the Storm chances as a Nikki Nester foul sent TSU's Lisa Parker to the free throw line with five ticks on the clock.
Parker, however, would miss both and Hughey pulled down the rebound, dashed to half court and let loose her only three-point attempt of the night, which fell as the horn sounded to list the Storm to a 78-77 win.
Hughey went the extra mile in the final seconds of the contest to collect her first double-double of the season. Her 10th rebound came with five seconds on the clock and she reached double-digit points just seconds later as her only three-pointer of the night fell. She finished with 11 points.
SE had three other scorers in double-figures, including Bailey Welch and Christin Nichols who each posted 14 points to pace the squad, while Coffey Chipped in 12.
Hughey's 10 rebounds paced the Storm who held a 45-to-29 advantage on the glass over the TexAnns.
It was a modest night for the SE guards as Nester and Welch each dished out three assists.
The Storm did survive a 20-turnover outing as TSU held a 22-2 edge in points off turnovers.
Southeastern shot 49.2 percent on the night from the field on the strength of a 68.2 percent second half in which it went 15-of-22. The Storm defense on the other hand held TSU to just 39.3 percent shooting.
The first seven minutes of the game were not nearly as kind to the Storm as the final five seconds.
TSU opened the game with a three-pointer and built from there, opening up a 21-5 run over the first 5:42 of the game.
SE would begin to chip away at the deficit and finally caught fire, turning a 31-20 deficit into a 36-33 lead when Ali Stone hit a layup with 1:46 to play in the half. The TexAnns, however, would trim the SE lead to 38-37 as the teams broke for half.
The Storm opened the second half with some leftover momentum and quickly built a 45-37 lead with an 8-0 run that was capped by a Welch jumper.
TSU would claw back and tie the game, but an 8-1 run capped by a Welch three-0pointer pushed the advantage to 58-51 with 9:31 to play.
TSU would again fight back and take its first lead of the second half on a pair of Shelby Adamson free throws with 4:52 to play at 68-66.
After twice tying the game, TSU would extend its lead to 77-73 following an Adamson three-point play with 1:27 to play, setting up Hughey's last second heroics.
