CALDWELL, Idaho --Aug. 18, 2010 – Last year was Shane Hanchey’s first year of membership in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and he made the most of it.
Hanchey, from Sulphur, La., won the once-in-a-lifetime title of Resistol Rookie of the Year in tie-down roping. En route to that title, he won the second round of competition at the Caldwell Night Rodeo. He also finished seventh in the over-all standings.
In his second trip to Caldwell, Hanchey has again been successful. He had a solid run of 9.1 seconds in the first round during slack on Monday. He along with his traveling partners, brothers Tuf and Clif Cooper left Caldwell and drove to Canby, Ore., to compete in another rodeo. They came back here to participate in Wednesday night’s rodeo and two of the three were very successful.
Hanchey stopped the clock in 8.9 seconds and while that probably won’t earn him any money in the round, he is tied for second place in the over-all standings here and will be back to compete in Saturday night’s finals. Nate Baldwin, from Chubbock, Idaho and Hanchey each have a total time of 18.0 seconds on two runs.
Clif Cooper, the oldest of the traveling trio at 22 had the best time of the night at 7.8 seconds. He is tied for second place in the second round. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a time in the first round, so he won’t qualify for Saturday’s finals.
The Cooper brothers make their home at Decatur, Texas. Tuf Cooper had a time of 12.0 second on Wednesday, so won’t win any money here. He is ranked third in the PRCA’s world standings with $82,345. Hanchey is right behind him with $80,235. The rivalry between the two friends may see their positions change if Hanchey continues to be successful here.
There is a new leader in saddle bronc riding, and it came from a neighbor. Ryan MacKenzie made the 60 mile trip from Jordan Valley, Ore., to compete here and it was well worth it. MacKenzie got on the horse named Gin Neat from Calgary Stampede and scored 85 points. Jesse James Kirby from Dodge City, Kan., is in second with 84 and Shaun Stroh from Dickinson, N.D., is third with an 83. These three rides made the saddle bronc riding exceptionally good to watch.
Rodeo competition continues here on Thursday with the third performance beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday’s rodeo will be a special fundraiser for Tough Enough for Pink, which raises funds for local women to get mammograms.
