The Texas Attitude finished the summer schedule on a 13-game winning streak, winning the Rock Creek (OK) Invitational Tournament on Saturday.  The Attitude (20-19) defeated Colbert High School 7-1 in the finals behind the pitching of Cassidy Hall, a sophomore at Sam Rayburn, who struck out 11 batters over 7 innings.  The Attitude held a 3-1 lead into the 7th inning before Dodd City’s Sarah Smeltzer put the game out of reach with a bases loaded triple off the right centerfield wall.

Colbert’s Breawna McCraw (a member of the Attitude’s National Championship team) pitched three scoreless innings before giving up singles to Whitesboro’s Monica Reed and Hall then hitting Avery Cranford, of Sam Rayburn, and Madelyn Dow, of Sam Rayburn, to load the bases.  McCraw then threw an outside pitch that caught the corner of the plate and Smeltzer roped the ball for 3-RBI.

The Attitude defeated Velma-Alma in the semifinals 7-2 with a big inning in the second, sending 11 batters to the plate for 6 runs.  The inning was led by Dow’s second home run of the tournament, a line shot over the left field wall, scoring three runs.  Smeltzer earned the win with a complete game and 7 strikeouts.

Friday the Attitude started off the day with Coleman High School and Smeltzer earned the win with 8 strikeouts and no earned runs.  Coleman’s only run came on a passed ball by Ali Weichman, of Sam Rayburn, in the third inning.  Dow hit her first home run of the tournament against Coleman, a 3-run shot to open the contest, scoring lead-off hitter and prep teammates Jaiden Pelton and Hall.

The nightcap for the Attitude on Friday started almost three hours late against Valliant High School.  Cranford got the ball for the Attitude and pitched the Attitude to a hard fought 2-1 victory, scoring the winning run herself in the fourth inning.  This time Cranford reached on a fielder’s choice then scored on a single by Pelton.  Cranford’s only run scored against her was unearned in the third inning on a wild pitch.

The Attitude opened up the tournament with two strong opponents, Soper High School and Colbert, on Thursday.  Two Attitude players recorded their first career home runs on the day – Smeltzer v. Soper and Jaiden v. Colbert.  Smeltzer also earned the 8-1 win over Soper.  Cranford picked up the win over Colbert, never losing to the cross-river rivals as a pitcher.

In three wins Smeltzer stuck out 20 while giving up just one earned run.  Hall struck out 11 in the finals and gave up no earned runs.  Dow hit her 14th and 15th home runs of the summer, while Smeltzer and Pelton hit their career firsts.  Dow also turned two double players and Whitesboro's Amelia Grimes turned a double play in the semifinals.

The Attitude will enter their fall schedule after holding open try-outs on Sunday, Aug. 22nd, at 2 pm at Whitesboro High School.  This tryout will fill the roster for the fall and summer of 2011.
