Eating in the library?!?

Eating in the library has always been a no-no. But eating and drinking can actually cause people to be quiet. It’s difficult to swallow and talk at the same time. Consequently, a new concept entitled “Reading Wednesday” has come to Bonham High School—allowing students to eat and read in the library. Now tablecloths are draped across reading tables and the aroma of food can be detected from the second floor.

Before former librarians accuse the staff of losing their minds, an explanation should be given. Librarians have always encouraged students to read. Reading is aerobics for the mind—whether you are a sprinter or a marathon runner. Joseph Addison said, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” However, students often have time constraints—especially when they are involved in so many extracurricular activities.

Now students can read in a quiet environment and enjoy their lunch at the same time. Librarians, Glenda Meador and Donna Rich said they have often done the same thing—read while eating lunch. They thought it would be fantastic--not to mention revolutionary--to offer this same opportunity to students. “Reading Wednesdays” allow students to bring their lunches to the library on Wednesday during both lunch periods. They can use this time to read for enjoyment or to complete an outside reading assignment.

According to one student, “I really like to read but the cafeteria is too noisy.”

Another student explained, “I want to come to the library and read, but I also want to be able to eat lunch. Now I can do both at the same time.”

So when you enter the A building on a Wednesday, you may think you are in the cafeteria—but without the noise!
