CHEYENNE, Wyo. ---July 29, 2010 --- The steer wrestling at Cheyenne Frontier Days (CFD) has been wild and western for nearly 100 years.
The first contest here was in 1914 and was won by Ed McCarty who went on to become a stock contractor and part owner of the legendary horse Midnight. It is a rodeo where legends are made and there are several things that factor into that.
All of the steers are fresh meaning that they have never been competed on before. They get a 30-foot head start, so they are running full-bore when the contestant gets to them and you never know who will end up flipping end over end during a run. Throughout the years, there have been many winners from here that have gone on to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
Two men that competed at the sixth performance here on Thursday are hoping to add their names to that list. Brad McGilchrist from Marysville, Calif., and Jule Hazen from Ashland, Kan. Hazen has been to the Wrangler National Finals rodeo one time. McGilchrist, originally from Australia has yet to qualify for rodeo’s championship event.
Hazen is at the top of the second round and over-all standings here. He had a time of 8.5 to move into first in the round and a total time of 15.7 seconds on two head. McGilchrist leads the first round with a time of 5.3 seconds, just two tenths off of the arena record of 5.1. He is second overall with 16.1. They will both qualify for Sunday ‘s final round and are in contention for their first CFD championship.
Last year’s bareback champion, Will Lowe could get another buckle here. Lowe is first in the second round and sixth in the overall standings. There are 19 bareback riders that will compete here on Friday and Saturday that will attempt to move him out of the standings. He might not hold his position but with this total score of 152 points, he is likely to be back here Sunday.
Billy Etbauer was hoping to repeat his saddle bronc riding win from last year, but is 11th in the standings here. With two more performances to go, Etbauer probably will get moved out of the top 12.
Trevor Brazile, the seven-time all-around champion is in contention for his first buckle here since 2001. Brazile is sixth in the tie-down roping standings. A broken barrier in team roping will prevent he and Patrick Smith from advancing to the finals in that event. He is 12th in the steer roping, so will be waiting to see what the six ropers left to compete do over the next two days. The all-around race here is still wide open, but Brazile is the favored cowboy to win.
There are still just two bull riders that have been successful on two rides. Thursday’s rodeo participated in the Tough Enough To Wear Pink Campaign and all of the bulls were named after cancer survivors.
Jake Hayworth from St. Anthony, Idaho is now tied for the lead in the overall standings of saddle bronc riding with 165 points. He is tied with Bradley Harter from Weatherford, Texas. Hayworth qualified for the NFR but was unable to compete because he injured his knee. He would certainly like to be among the competitors in Las Vegas in December and a win here would help him achieve that goal.
All of the cowboys at Friday’s rodeo will be in their first round of competition. Barrel racers are in their second. The rodeo starts at 1 p.m., and at its conclusion the first round in all of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association events will be complete.
