In recognition of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, members of Hong-Gia Vietnamese Martial Arts Group from Dallas performed a colorful Lion Dance and martial arts demonstration at the Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham May 28.
Many North Texans have never had an opportunity to appreciate the physical prowess and pageantry included in this symbolic dance performed to bring good luck and prosperity. The audience in Bonham seemed to be equally impressed by the Lion Dance and the exhibition of martial arts skills.
Hong-Gia Vietnamese Martial Arts Group is managed by Loc Nguyen of Fort Worth, who says that his group is often called upon to perform at business grand openings and weddings.
Variations of the Lion Dance are staples at ceremonies and parades throughout Asia. An important traditional dance in Chinese culture, the Lion Dance possibly has ancient roots to India where Asiatic lions once roamed.
The Lion Dance was the latest fascinating event at the Bonham V.A. that recognized the contributions different cultures have made to the U.S. Last year, Native American dancers thrilled a crowd at the spacious V.A. auditorium.
