Southeastern sweeps pair at SWOSU

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - For the second-straight conference series, Southeastern baseball got off to a hot start and swept the opening day action, this time taking decisions of 5-2 and 15-4 from Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday afternoon in Weatherford, Okla.
The wins improve the Savage Storm to 19-9 on the season and 15-7 in Lone Star Conference play, while SWOSU slips to 16-13, 11-10 in conference play. The teams will finish their series, weather permitting, on Saturday afternoon back in Weatherford, Okla.
In the opener, SE fell behind 2-0 after the Bulldogs put up single runs in the each of the first two innings.
The Storm cut into that deficit in the third when Brad Shankle scored on a wild pitch.
SE took the lead in the next inning, first tying the game when Stephen Garrett drove in Mike McCollum with a single, then moving ahead when Justin Miller scored on an error by the Bulldog catcher.
The Storm added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning when KC Pfister connected on a two-run homer that also scored Miller to fashion the 5-2 final.
Jimmy Johnson moved to 6-0 on the hill, tossing 4.1 innings with a pair of runs on seven hits with one strikeout before handing the ball to Heath Wyatt who collected his 11th save of the year with 2.2 innings pitched, allowing one hit and striking out four.
Six different hitters combined on SE's six hits for the contest, with Pfister driving in a pair of runs and Garrett adding another RBI.
Miller also scored a pair of runs.
In the nightcap the bats came back to life as the Storm racked up 19 hits, with six players posting multi-hit outings.
Miller, Pfister and Shankle each tallied three-hit outings, with Shankle driving in three runs on the day and Miller scoring three times.
Garrett, Blake Gentry, Casey Gibson and Torey Oller added a pair of hits each, with seven players recording an RBI on the game.
On the bump, Dan McKinney got the start and improved to 2-2 after tossing 5.1 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
Phillip McKee entered in relief and earned the endurance save after tossing 3.2 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three.
SE took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but broke things open in the third inning when it sent 12 hitters to the plate. All nine players reached base safely and scored a run in the inning and the Storm led 10-0 after three.
The lead expanded to 12-0 with RBI from Shankle and Garrett in the fifth inning.
SWOSU cut into the deficit with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but McKee took the hill in relief and shut down the Bulldog attack.
SE added three more insurance runs in the ninth inning to seal the 15-4 win.
