The J. J. Pearce Lady Mustangs 4A state champion soccer team traveled to Bryan-College Station last month to compete in the prestigious Brazos Valley Cup soccer tournament.

Pearce defeated the 5A Lady Cavaliers from The Woodlands' College Park and the 5A Lady Maroons from Stephen F. Austin High School to advance to the semi-finals against the Friendswood Lady Mustangs, which was a rematch of last year's state 4A finals. The Pearce Lady Mustangs were once again victorious with a goal from senior Taylor Mathews and two goals from junior Brooke Johnston.

The Brazos Valley Cup Championship game was played on the Texas A&M soccer field January 23 against the 5A Bryan Lady Vikings.
Pearce's Taylor Mathews contributed three goals, senior Kathryn Watson and junior Brooke Johnston contributed two goals each, and senior Sheina Tolmas scored an additional goal to win the Championship 8 -1.

"This team is very unique and has very special chemistry," said Pearce Lady Mustangs coach Oscar Borgarello. "We were somewhat superstitious. The girls wanted to return to play the Brazos Cup because we won it last year, then went on to win the first girls soccer State Championship in Pearce history."

Richardson's J. J. Pearce High School was rated an Exemplary Texas School for 2009-2010. More at http://www.risd.org/schools/phs/
