It was a game dominated by tough man-to-man defenses, but the Trenton Tigers held on to beat the Wolfe City Wolves 43 - 36 Friday night in Wolfe City.
Trenton pulled out to a first quarter 13 - 7 lead behind senior Derek Meyer's 8 points. Senior Cramer Johnson and freshman Alex Meyer added the other two buckets and senior Tray Kidwell added a free throw.
The Tigers managed only nine points in the 2nd quarter but limited the Wolves to only 8 of their own. Alex Meyer hit a 3-pointer, fellow freshman Blake Wilson knocked down two strong inside buckets, and Kidwell made both shots of a two-shot foul.
Defense again was the name of the game in the third quarter as Trenton outscored the Wolves 8 - 5. Senior Aaron Hass made a bucket and a free throw, Derek Meyer scored on two drives to the basket, and Wilson made one of two free throws to give the Tigers a 30 - 20 lead going into the last stanza.
The Wolves punched in 4 three-pointers in the 4th, but two inside shots by junior Seth Henry, another basket by Derek Meyer, and 6-of-6 free throw shooting by Kidwell and Alex Meyer sealed the win for the Trenton Tigers.
The win leaves Trenton (16-10, 8-2) alone in the runner-up spot in District 17A. The Tigers close out district play next week with Sam Rayburn in Trenton on Tuesday and Celeste in Trenton on Friday. A win for the Tigers on either night sends them to bi-district to face the third place team from District 18A.
