DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The University of North Texas College of Music will present the first of several Haiti relief concerts Feb. 6 (Saturday) -- when donations will be encouraged during an evening of powerful choir and orchestra music.
"Like everyone, we at the College of Music want to help those in need in Haiti, and we are doing so through our music," said Dr. James C. Scott, dean of the UNT College of Music. "We decided to start our relief efforts with one of our most important concerts of the year --the Symphony Orchestra's performance of Mahler's First Symphony. This is just the beginning. Throughout the semester, we plan to dedicate more concerts to Haiti relief."
The UNT A Cappella Choir, directed by Jerry McCoy, will sing Requiem, written by Austin resident Eliza Gilkyson for the survivors of the 2004 tsunami; Pater Noster by Spanish composer Javier Busto; Bogoroditse devo by Sergei Rachmaninoff, from his All Night Vigil; and MLK, written by U2 and arranged for choir by Bob Chilcott in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
The Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Itkin, will then perform the major work of the evening, Mahler's masterful Symphony No. 1.
The performance will take place at 8 p.m. Feb. 6 (Saturday) in Winspear Performance Hall of the Murchison Performing Arts Center, located along the north side of Interstate 35E at North Texas Boulevard. Tickets are $8 to $10.
Donations will be collected at the concert.
