Trenton -- The opening round of the 19th annual Trenton Holiday Basketball Tournament is in the books, with teams from Boyd, Dekalb, Dodd City, Ector, Trenton, Sam Rayburn and Valley View advancing in the winners bracket.
On the girls side of the bracket, Sam Rayburn will take on Valley View at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday in one semifinals match, while Fannindel will face Boyd in the other semifinals contest at 6:00 p.m.
For the boys, it will be Trenton, Dekalb, Ector and Dodd City moving on to the next round. Ector and Dodd City will square off at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday in the first boys semifinals games. At 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Trenton and Dekalb collide in the other boys semifinals contest.
The opening round got underway with a powerful Boyd team defeating Savoy, 78-33. Boyd's Jessica Drake scorched the nets for 26 points to lead all scorers, teammate Shelbi Tidwell poured in 21 points and Keenan Burgin had nine points. Savoy was led by Bailey McGehee's 16 points.
The next girls game featured a dominant Valley View squad knocking off Dodd City, 81-21. Valley View's Taylor Dowd, a 6' 3" junior threw in 34 a game-high points and teammate Kinzee Pierce dropped in 12 points. Dodd City's offense was paced by Alex Hilliard's 10 points.
THe Sam Rayburn and Ector girls were up next, with Sam Rayburn holding off a late rally by Ector to win, 34-27. Torri Pannell led Sam Rayburn with 10 points, Sydney Davis scored seven and Kylee Abbott finished with five points. Ector's Kristina Williams led all scorers with 13 points, Carlie Easley contributed six points and Brittney Crowell had four points.
In the final girls game of the opening round, Fannindel came out on top of Trenton, 50-43. Fannindel's Rosalynn McGee had a game-high 21 points and teammate Renesia McGee was close behind with 17 points. Trenton was led by Gaby Galvan's 10 points and Marla Frazier had eight points.
The boys side of the bracket got underway with Dekalb slipping by Savoy, 77-69. Markel Moore put in a 23 points to pace the Dekalb attack, with teammate Skylar Lawing knocking down 18 points. Savoy's Justin Curry led all scorers with 34 points. Scott Bigbee scored nine and John Morris added eight points.
In the next game a versatile Dodd City squad turned back Valley View, 56-42. Jaylen Wallace led Dodd City with 15 points, but it was a very balanced attack. Patrick Moore finished with 14 points, while Landon Darwin and Shihei Williams each tossed in 10 points. Valley View's Cameron Vesperman put up 23 points and teammate Scott Willis had eight points.
The third boys game featured Ector and Sam Rayburn, with Ector prevailing, 67-61. Ector's Bradley Bingham and Brandon Richards each scored 16, with Bradlee Coldiron dropping in 12 points. Sam Rayburn's Kole Caplinger had a game-high 24 points and Drew Davis finished with 15 points.
Trenton and Fannindel tangled in the final game of the opening round and Trenton advanced with a 72-64 victory. Trenton was led by Tray Kidwell's 16 points, Tyler Lewis had 12 points, Aaron Hass chipped in 11 points and Cramer Johnson put up 10 points. Fannindel's Cory Brown had a game-high 20 points, Justin Sims scored 15, Jacolby Judkins finished with 14 points and Steven Brown scored nine.
