GCC opens child development courses for continuing education
Child Guidance explores guidance strategies for promoting pro-social behaviors in children. The course emphasizes guidance principles and techniques, family involvement and cultural influences. Students gain practical application through direct participation with children.
Children with Special Needs is a survey course covering topics that impact those who work with children requiring special attention. Students learn about possible causes and characteristics of exceptionalities, intervention strategies, available resources, referral processes, the advocacy role, and legislative issues.
“Whether taken as a degree requirement, for professional development or for personal fulfillment, both courses provide excellent information to anyone who works with children,” said Dr. Keri Harvey, education professor at GCC.
Registration is ongoing until Jan. 7 at 4 p.m. The registration process varies based on whether the courses will be taken for college credit or as continuing education. Both classes begin January 11.
Students enrolling to earn college credit: Both courses are required for students pursuing the college’s Child Development Certificate. Each course provides three hours of college credit. Tuition is based on student residency. Returning GCC students may register online. New students must complete a GCC application for admission before registering for either course. To apply, visit the GCC website at
www.grayson.edu and click on “Apply Online.” For more information about taking the courses for college credit, questions may be directed to recruiting@grayson.edu.Continuing education students: Participants who take the courses for continuing education purposes do not need to complete the online GCC admissions application. The classes benefit preschool teachers, elementary teachers, daycare workers and those for whom Texas law mandates CE hours. Additional beneficiaries include parents, grandparents, home childcare providers, Sunday School teachers, coaches, activity leaders and others who work with children.
Each course provides 4.8 hours of CE credit. Cost per course is $140 plus the textbook. CE registration may be completed in person in GCC’s Center for Workplace Learning on the college’s Main Campus, online at www.cwlgcc.org, or by phone at 903-463-8765 if paying with MasterCard, Discover or Visa credit cards.
