We are making a major push to get the puppies and kitties out of the shelter and into homes for the holidays.  If you are considering a new pet for Christmas please come visit us at PetSense in Greenville Dec. 12 and PetSense in Sulphur Springs Dec. 19. Or make an appointment to come by the shelter 903/496-2412 or email for a faster response commercepets@yahoo.com.  You can view many of our available pets on Pet Finders Web site.

If you adopt a puppy here are some helpful tips.  1) Don’t expect your puppy to understand sentences.  It will react to your tone of voice; not the words. 2) Don’t allow young children to interact with your pup unsupervised.  Children have to learn the proper way to handle and play with a puppy, so don’t set your puppy up for a disaster.  3)  Do not feed your puppy human food.  Their digestive system is very sensitive, so stay with puppy food.  4) Do not expect love and attention to substitute for good puppy parenting.  You have to set limits for your puppy or you will have trouble down the line.  5) Do not supply all the good things in life for free.  You must teach your new pet that they have to behave and do what is expected to receive rewards.  6) Do not ever get angry with your puppy.  They don’t understand what is correct until you teach them.

Cold weather rules to follow – 1) never bathe your dog outdoors in cold weather.  2) Never let a wet dog outside in the winter.  3) Wash your dog indoors in a warm place.  4) Make it quick.  Bathe and dry your dog as quickly as possible.  5)  Turn up the heat in your home before giving your dog a bath.  6) After his bath, “towel dry” your dog.  Or, use a hair dryer set to “Low” to dry him even faster.  7)  During cold weather, exercise is a good way to help stimulate circulation and warm up your dog after a bath.  8)  REMEMBER, if you feel cold your pet is probably cold too.  9)  Pay close attention to your pet’s feet when they come inside, because salt can cause them to damage their pads.

Remember your local shelters when looking for a new pet.  There are many wonderful pets sitting in the shelters waiting for a forever home.  If you would like to make a donation in honor of someone for Christmas please mail to PO Box 2, Commerce, TX 75429 and let us know to whom to mail a card letting them know about the gift.  We are 100% volunteer driven and a non-profit organization; 100% of the funds that come in go directly to the care of the animals in our shelter.  Thank you and have a wonderful holiday!
