Larry Standlee named Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) 'Volunteer of the Year'

Larry Standlee of Windom was awarded the 2009 Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) “Volunteer of the Year,” Friday, November 20, 2009 at Boyd Baptist Church.

Larry is a 1965 graduate of Dodd City High School. He is a 1992 graduate of East Texas State University with a BBA. Larry is a 23-year veteran of the United States Navy submarine force. He retired from the US Naval Submarine Base at Kings Bay, Georgia and returned to Fannin County in 1989.



Larry is a 20-year member of the Windom Lions Club where he has served has its president and ten years as the club secretary. He began volunteer service in 1999 with the Bonham Area Chamber of Commerce, where he served for six years. When the Chamber moved to the square, he left the Chamber and went to work for the Fannin County Museum of History. Larry serves as Windom’s representative on the Fannin County Water Supply Agency.

Larry was appointed by the Fannin County Commissioner’s Court to the Fannin County Historical Commission in 2006. He serves as the Historical Marker Chairperson and Vice President. Over the past two years he has visited and recorded more than 130 cemeteries. He assists with oral history interviews. The Commission has recorded 60 oral history interviews. CDs are kept at the Commission offices and Bonham Public Library.

When he was presented his award, Larry told the crowd Texas and Fannin County have wonderful histories. And that we should work very hard to make sure the history was somehow saved.
