Whitewright -- The Whitewright Lady Tigers improved to 5-0 with a 54-33 victory over the Savoy Lady Cardinals Tuesday night.
During the first period, Savoy sophomore Bailey McGehee scored eight points to keep her Lady Cards neck-and-neck with the Lady Tigers. It took a trio of three-point shots in the second period by Whitewright for the Lady Tigers to take a 25-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The teams traded baskets in a very competitive third period, but Whitewright's pressure defense forced four consecutive turnovers to fuel a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Tigers knocked down 19 points in the final frame to finally pull away from a stubborn Savoy team that made this a very exciting game for three quarters.
Whitewright had three young ladies finish in double figures to offset McGehee's big night. Skylar Greenwood poured in 18 points, Hanna Hames scored 16 and Haley Langford finished with 14 points. Molly Mencl dropped in six points for the Lady Tigers.
Bailey McGehee led all scorers with 21 points and she also came up with a team-high four steals for Savoy. Macalla Mosley scored six, Lauren Camp finished with five points and Caitlin McClain had three points.
The Whitewright Lady Tigers' next game will be in the Bland Tournment against Trenton.
