On Sunday, November 8, 2009, Rev. Aaron White was installed as Associate Minister of First Unitarian Church of Dallas (First Church); the fifth largest Unitarian Universalist (UU) congregation in the country.
Reverend White joins the Reverend Doctor Daniel Kanter, who was installed as Senior Minister at First Church in January. Reverend White is a 2004 graduate of Austin College with a Religion Major and Theatre Minor and a 2007 graduate of Harvard Divinity School with a Masters in Divinity. While in Boston, Aaron served as a chaplain at Massachusetts General Hospital, worked as a Research Associate at the Pluralism Project, and served Arlington Street Church (UU) as a religious educator. In 2007 Aaron received first place in Harvard's annual Billings Preaching Prize.
Aaron was born in Arlington, TX and raised in Grand Prairie. As a native Texan, Aaron quickly returned home after graduation from seminary. Aaron and his wife, Kate Wiseheart, most recently lived in Austin, where Aaron worked as a Consulting Minister for a UU church in San Marcos and as Young Adult Minister for the Southwest UU Conference.
Aaron's call to ministry was a confirmation of the direction he was headed while at Austin College. In a course exercise offered by the Quaker author Parker Palmer, Aaron took an inventory of the various elements of his life and made notice of the common themes that emerged. His themes included spiritual practice, ethics and social movements. His school studies included work on public speaking, emotional intelligence, leadership, and religion. Aaron realized that his life had been telling a story he had not yet heard: his calling to the ministry.
Aaron's "good news" message is that all people are connected to the sacred, that each and every human being deserves love, and that all people have something to offer in building the beloved community. True to Unitarian Universalist values, Aaron remains committed to work on social justice projects, community building, and interfaith dialogue.
As Associate Minister, Rev. White will work with Senior Minister Dr. Daniel Kanter, who sees the ministry of this church embodying a theology that assumes that people are good and that a purposeful life can be rewarding.
With this theological position, we become more willing to create hope by crossing boundaries uncorrupted by cynicism and fear.
