Autumn striper fishing on Lake Texoma

Autumn is my favorite time of the year to catch stripers. Many people
have winterized their boats and focused their efforts on hunting leaving the lake less crowed while the fish are becoming more and more active with the falling water temperatures.
Also the seagulls have arrived making it easy to find where the fish are. The gulls can be seen feeding from long distances. They will flock up in large numbers and dive in the water to catch shad and you can bet the fish will be actively feeding under them making locating the fish as easy as it gets.
Fishing soft plastics, slabs, or live bait all work extremely well during this time. My bread and butter is a 4" glow sassy shad with a 1oz head.
I went out Monday evening, Nov. 2 and it was a gorgeous day, warm, sunny, and not the least bit of wind. Lake Texoma looked like a shimmering mirror with only the occasional boat or bird hitting the water to disturb the surface.

Normally these are not the most ideal conditions for fishing but with the water temperature at 65°, the fish are feeding all day every day, even in the worst of conditions. The fish were not actively feeding as expected but there were still plenty of fish to be fooled into sticking a hook in their mouths. We started off the evening around 1:00 using bait.
We were in 40ft of water and there were lots of fish under us. The fish would grab the bait and just sit there, then you would see the rod start to slowly bend, fish on! We steadily caught fish for the next 2 hours ranging in size from small to 20".
As it was getting later, we decided to switch to lures to try for some bigger fish. We started beating shallow water points with sassy shad catching fish on every stop. A few times we got into them pretty good but it didn't last long as the fish were easily spooked in the calm water. We would catch a few and move to the next spot.
We never found the monster we were looking for but we did get into some nice fish up to 7 pounds. It was another great day out on Texoma. I got to enjoy some great weather with some great company.
