Bonham, Texas – (October 24, 2009) -- Fannin County Habitat for Humanity invites everyone to attend the first Volunteer Orientation for the Leonard home. It is to be held on Monday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the City Hall Community Room. All interested parties are required to attend an orientation before they can become registered volunteers for Habitat. Due to insurance and safety issues only registered volunteers will be allowed in the construction zone once building starts. Habitat always encourages visitors to the job site and will be glad to provide a guided tour at any time.
Habitat also offers an online training course in job site safety. Information can be found at: http://www.hfhvolunteerinsurance.com/default.htm
Once the course is successfully completed, your local affiliate will be notified and they will give a gift of the newest designed t-shirt and a certificate of completion.
Volunteer Opportunities are many and varied. Volunteer coordinator Eva Fryar explains, “With the construction phase of the Leonard home starting in November there is a huge need for dozens and dozens of volunteers with all skill sets—or with none. The beauty of volunteering for Habitat is that we train. We help you to expand your skills and experiences while being a part of the excitement of helping to build dreams. Yes, we need hammer swingers, but we need so much more than that. Statistics say that for every hour of work on the construction site there are 10 hours of other work that made it possible. We need your help if you can swing a hammer, use the phone or make a casserole!”
Volunteers are needed in the following areas:
SUB-CONTRACTORS: skilled professionals willing to donate materials and/or labor to help Habitat build a low-cost dream: call us to get plans and a quote sheet from us.
• Plumbers
• Foundation
• Drywall
• Roofers
• Flooring
• Heat and A/C
• Tell us what you can do
DAY CREW LEADERS: willing to work closely with Habitat’s Construction Committee to train and motivate 4-6 unskilled volunteers; those who can take a project and do it with minimal instructions. Examples:
• Hanging doors and cabinets
• Laying flooring
• Painters
• Framing
• Set trusses
• Tell us what you can do
DIYers: have a few skills and knows some about hand tools, but needs instructions for completing a project.
GOFER CLUB MEMBERS: no skills but willing to learn and help where ever needed.
MEAL COORDINATOR: Recruit groups and individuals to provide mid-morning snacks, drinks and lunches for the construction crews and visitors throughout the building project and dedication.
ON-SITE HELPERS: Can’t swing a hammer and have no interest in learning? That’s great because we can still use your help.
• Site Hosts: set-up each workday, register volunteers for the day, greet visitors
• Meal Providers: sign up for bringing drinks, lunches, breakfast snacks or paper/plastic service
• YOUTH COORDINATOR: recruit young people to help set-up, cleanup, prepare meals, do yard work and certain phase of the construction.
• COMMUNITY AWARENESS AND SPECIAL EVENTS: recruiting donors, sub-contractors, sponsors and producing fundraiser events; creating and/or distributing posters fliers and PR; phone services.
