Lindsay Lady Knights hold on to top spot in TGCA Volleyball Poll

The Lindsay Lady Knights (22-10, 6-0) have had a firm grip on the No. 1 spot in Class A since winning the Class A Shootout in Bronte, Texas early in the season.

Lindsay is fresh off a 3-1 win over Blue Ridge.

The Lady Knights will lower the drawbridge and welcome Savoy to their castle on Friday.

Comments: Defending state champion Windthorst lost their first district match in 19 years when Archer City beat the Trojanettes in a five game thriller.  Louise defeated Boling 25-2, 25-11, 25-9 and Nordheim 25-6, 25-10, 25-6 (district opener). Louise also defeated Woodsboro 25-17, 25-12, 28-18 and Runge 25-13, 25-13, 25-12 to improve to 23-2 on the season.  Santa Gertrudis Academy beat Alice 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 and Ingleside 25-18, 26-28, 25-27, 26-24, 16-14 despite the absence of several starters due to the flu.  Iola has won seven straight including a sweep of 2A Anderson-Shiro last Friday.  After a slow start, Plains has improved dramatically heading into district.  Evant improved to 15-5 by a win over Dublin.  Simms Bowie defeated Wolfe City. Avery improved to 24-6 overall and 3-1 in district losing only to Detroit.

Comments: This is as hot as it gets. White Oak is unbeaten at 31-0, Centerville has one loss and defending champion Bushland has several losses but they are to the 4A and 5A muscle in the state.  Centerville defeated Trinity on Tuesday and Groveton on Saturday to improve to 30-1 and 5-0 in district.  Schulenburg (17-8, 3-1) swept Hallettsville (18-8, 2-2) in Hallettsville.  Crawford lost to 3A Robinson 25-18, 13-25, 25-23, 21-25, 14-16 then beat Hamilton 25-14, 25-14, 25-14 to start District 16 play and improve to 20-7 overall. Hallettsville lost to 3A ranked Columbus and fourth ranked 2A Weimar who beat both Hallettsville and Hempstead to improve to 3-0, season 24-4. The Wildcats have lost twice to 3A Columbus and 3A LaGrange, both state ranked for their only defeats.  Poth lost to Seguin in four despite 15 kills by Becky Friesenhahn.  Salado blitzed Rogers and looked very good doing so.  The Eagles are solid fundamentally but took a hit with a key injury last week.  Poth beat Antonian 22-25, 24-26, 25-20, 27-25, 15-10 and Sinton 25-11, 25-13, 25-13.  Hallettsville swept East Bernard. Crawford beat McGregor 25-21, 25-11, 25-13 and Moody 26-24, 25-23, 25-22  to improve to 22-7 overall and 3-0 in district.  Weimar beat Rice 25-16, 25-17, 25-23 then defeated Wallis Brazos, 25-12, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21 to improve to 5-0 in district and 26-4 on the season. Leon is 28-3 overall with wins over: Quitman, Decatur, Farmersville, Robinson and won the Tyler tournament.    Denver City is 22-5 after beating Jal, New Mexico. and Marfa in straight sets, we are now 22-5.  Poth improved to 22-9 with a four game win over 3A Cuero.  Freer had a District 31-2A showdown against George West. Freer prevailed 25-22, 25-24, 25-16 as sophomores Avery Acker (16 kills) and Celeste Laredo (13 kills) led the way.  Freer improves to 19-8 overall and 4-0 in district play. Alpine is off to another really good year, winning the Pecos tournament, beating Class 3A Pecos in the final and are currently 21-9. Quitman won its first 2 district 13AA matches beating Grand Saline 25-15, 25-15, 25-15 then Lone Oak 25-15, 25-14, 25-16 to improve to 25-6 overall.

Comments: Columbus swept Hallettsville and beat Wharton .  Yoakum beat Schulenburg 3-2 , and Wharton beat Edna and Hitchcock.  Middle blocker Heather Reynolds of Wharton was named the Victoria Advocate player of the week and player of week for Max Preps and the AVCA. Wharton is 16-4 on the season. Monahans beat Kermit and Crane to improve to 24-5. Llano lost to Marble Falls in four games.  The Wharton Lady Tigers are now 18-4  after beating El Campo and Boling. Schulenburg (17-8, 3-1) swept Hallettsville (18-8, 2-2) in Hallettsville . Cuero (22-3) downed Palacios 3-1.  Edna is 14-7 but has lost to Cuero and Calhoun.  Paris North Lamar opened district by beating  Van Alstyne (23-5) in a five game barn burner 28-26, 18-25, 18-25, 27-25, 15-13.  Commerce beat district opponents Anna and North Hopkins in straight sets to improve to 29-3 on the season.  Prosper is 28-2 and is on a 25 match win streak.  Monahans beat Pecos 25-20, 25-16, 25-12 and Seminole 25-21, 25-19, 25-10 to improve to 26-5 on the season. Groesbeck defeated Mexia, in Groesbeck ,  20-25, 29-27, 18-25, 28-26, 15-13.  Lorena beat LaVega 25-13, 25-18, 25-20 and Robinson defeated Connally 25-20, 25-6, 25-13.  Argyle beat Celina to improve to 20-9.  La Feria is 18-2 and 4-0 in district play.

Comments: Montgomery is 19-10 and fell to 4-1 in district with a five game loss at Brenham winning 25-13, losing 13-25 and 23-25 then winning 25-23 before losing the final game 15-8.  Highland Park is playing well despite having four starters out with injuries including setter Tori Freeman, last year's All State Tournament Pick, Outside Hitter Margeaux Mendenhall, Libero Abby Carroll and MH Hope Ogden.  All four players were starters on last year's state team.  Highland Park is 2-1 in district beating Rockwall and Rockwall Heath and losing to top ranked Pearce who just keeps rolling along, unchallenged in district play.  Elgin is 3-0 in district and is tied for district lead with Hays. Denton Guyer has had a roller coaster season with impressive wins over Dumas and Rockwall and impressive losses to Westwood, Coppell, Austin Bowie, Hebron and Lovejoy. A strong periodic showing but they could make noise come playoffs. Aubree Piper and Ashley Davis had 10 kills each as Canyon Randall swept Canyon while Dumas defeated the Amarillo Rockets in three straight and Red Oak swept Lancaster.   Lake Travis blasted Marble Falls while Hays is 5-0 and Elgin 4-0 in district play.

Comments: Round Rock Westwood dropped their first two games to Leander then stormed back winning 15-9 in game five.  Tough time for Leander as the lady Lions were also beaten by Georgetown.  A&M Consolidated slammed Belton.  Sara Shaw slammed 17 kills as Westlake swept Austin Bowie.  College Park defeated the Woodlands Friday night in district 14-5A action 25-22, 21-25, 27-25, 25-22 to improve to 23-8, 1-0 with their fourth straight win and eleventh in their last 13 matches. San Antonio Reagan swept Madison 25-8, 25-12, 25-19 while Amarillo got Jan Barker her eight hundred coaching win by beating Odessa Permian 25-10, 25-11, 25-7.  Elsewhere, San Antonio O’Connor, Allen, Katy Cinco Ranch, Houston Stratford, A&M Consolidated and Coppell all won handily.
