Area students assist with college transition at Austin College

SHERMAN—The transition from high school life to a college atmosphere can be a bit overwhelming.  To assists students in this challenging time, all Austin College freshmen take a first-semester Communication Inquiry (CI) course designed to help students adjust to college coursework while studying a special interest course.  Select upper-class students assist in each class as CI leaders, acting as both teaching assistants and mentors to the incoming freshman.

The CI leaders arrived on campus a week early this fall to complete training sessions where they covered information such as library resources, improving writing skills, and academic advising that will enable them to help their CI class. During the fall semester CI leaders give presentations and lead group discussion. They have input with faculty on student evaluations and grading.  At the close of the semester, CI leaders complete papers about the semester and what they have learned in order to earn academic credit for the experience.
