Around 8:22 p.m. on September 22, 2009, Commerce Police Officers received a call of a hit-and-run at the intersection of Pine Street and Oak St. Officers arrived to find two Hispanic males that had been hit.
Commerce Fire Department and American Medical Response arrived and began care of the two victims. Both victims had severe injuries, but one was critical and was flown to Parkland Hospital by air ambulance. The other was taken by ground to Hunt Regional Hospital of Greenville.
After further investigation, it was determined that this was not a hit and run accident, but was a continuation of a disturbance that started at a residence at the same intersection. The suspect and victims were involved in an altercation at a party. The victims retrieved weapons, a 2X6 board and a 4-foot level, to defend themselves.
When the suspect left in his vehicle, one of the victims struck the rear of the car. Both victims walked off heading to their home. The vehicle turned around and accelerated on Oak Street. When it approached Pine Street, it struck one of the victims, knocking him to the ground then running over him. As the suspect stuck this victim, his car struck a telephone pole, causing the vehicle to spin southbound onto Pine Street. The second victim was struck, rolled onto the hood of the car, carried for approximately 30 feet and was thrown onto the sidewalk.
The vehicle fled the scene to the Village Apartments where a Texas A&M University Police Officer located it. After interviewing witnesses, the suspect was identified and was arrested for 2 counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. He was transported Hunt County Jail where he was arraigned Judge Beacom. Bond was set at $100,000. A hold for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been placed on him as well.
